Media Evaluation Questions (First Draft)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

From my research I was able to identify the common features of a music magazine. My media product has the main features such as the title to easily identify the magazine so the audience knows what magazine they are looking at. I have also included the main image on the front which is of my cover -   artist for the magazine, this gives an idea of the genre of the magazine as the audience can tell by the clothes and the positioning of the main image. I will use the main conventions on my cover story as well to make my work look more professional and like a real magazine to encourage people to buy it.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product represents the social groups of teenagers and especially those who are big into their RnB music, this music would represent more of a young adult, late teenager age because of the look of the artists and the lyrics used in their music may not be entirely appropriate for younger teenagers.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

My magazine might be distributed by a company similar to Bauer Media Group. They distribute magazines like Kerrang so my magazine could be seen to be similar to that so I believe an institution like that would distribute my magazine. I believe they would distribute my music well as they are well known in the industry and would have a large gathering so it is more likely to appeal to people. I think my magazine would sell better in shops than compared to an online magazine so a company like Bauer Media Group would definitely be able to help achieve this because of the large amount of links they have between companies.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My media product will have the audience of boys and girls around the ages of 16 – 25 such as teenagers and young adults. My magazine will mainly be aimed at anyone who has interest in music but more specifically anyone who likes R and B. The demographic my product will appeal to is people who come under E and D, and some C1’s as well may be interested in my magazine because the information inside may apply to them. I would like to aim my magazine at both genders so it gets a larger audience and there may be some girls or boys that really like R and B, but the colors and layout I use may not appeal to them so I would like it to be a general magazine rather than gender specific.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I hope to attract my audience by using colors and a design that will stand out and will appeal to my target audience of teenagers and young adults. The colors I will use will be bright and stand out but will still stick to my magazines genre design. I will also have a cover image that will appeal to my audience and that it looks professional enough so people will buy it. I will also include an interesting cover story that will appeal to a large audience and a small insight into the artist will make people want to buy the magazine and read the full article. My magazine will be in a very informal language so it is more likely to appeal to my target audience of teenagers and young adults.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

From the technologies I have used I have learnt a lot of new skills around how to edit images and make a product that looks realistic and can be compared with the real thing. I have learnt that there is a wide range of features that can add in many interesting effects to my work and I have tried to use a wider variety in my media product. I have learnt about how different companies will sell their product and what is the best way to advertise your magazine and make it stand out. I learnt that I can use different technologies such as Photoshop to achieve this look for my magazine so it reaches the professional standard.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt in the progression from it
to the full product?

From start to finish I have learnt many different techniques about how to create a detailed magazine that features all the different conventions that a typical magazine has. I have learnt what a professional magazine looks like and the stages I can do to achieve my own professional looking magazine. I have learnt the typical codes and conventions of magazines so I knew what features I could use in my magazine to make it look like a real magazine. I have learnt the best and easiest ways to do tasks to try and achieve the best results.
